GSR Racing Announces Drivers For 2012

Rookies Gannis, Cristiani team up in K&N Pro Series West

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - Cassie Gannis will return with GSR Racing for a full season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West this year and make a run for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors, the team has announced.

Seventeen-year-old Trevor Cristiani, Cassie’s new teammate at GSR, will make his series debut and will also make a run for rookie honors.

Greg Rayl, last year’s full-time driver for GSR, will be stepping out of the driver’s seat to play a role of car chief/crew chief for both teams.

“We had a great 2011 season, improving from 12th in points in 2010 to 11th in 2011”. Rayl said. “Winning the NASCAR sportsmanship award in 2010 was the highlight of my K&N career, but finishing a couple races in the top 10 this year came real close.”

"GSR Racing is now providing opportunities for young drivers to experience the next level of racing, giving drivers a chance to learn while keeping racing fun and exciting is our goal," he said.

“Too many young drivers get so serious at this level that they forget to have any fun” said Rayl, “We always try to have a good time, even when things don’t go our way. If our drivers can advance further in their racing careers, we hope their time with us teaches them to enjoy what they are doing.”

Braeden Havens to drive forThompson Motorsports

SPOKANE, Wash. (January 6, 2012)- Braeden Havens, the reigning Inland Northwest Super Stock Association champion, has signed to drive in selected NASCAR K&N Pro Series West events during the upcoming 2012 season.

Havens debut behind the wheel of the Thompson-owned Western Rail sponsored Chevrolet will come April 14 at Havasu 95 Speedway in Lake Havasu, AZ. This year’s schedule for Havens includes all of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series short track races and a potential start at Phoenix International Raceway in November.

“It’s pretty exciting to know I’ll be competing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series this year,” Havens said. “I never thought I would get to this point in my racing career where we’re out racing against the best of the best on the West Coast. What a feeling to say I am a NASCAR driver.”

Brett Thompson of Thompson Motorsports sees the addition of Havens as a positive step for his race team.

“I’ve seen what he’s capable of and I think he can do well on the series,” Thompson noted.

Having a teammate can be beneficial for both drivers, he added.

“You look what Gene Price Motorsports did last season on the short-tracks (including wins in Montana, Las Vegas, Irwindale, Colorado and top-5 finishes in Las Vegas) and you can see there are always benefits in numbers. It will be interesting to see what (Braeden) likes in a car and what I like.”

Havens is equally excited about the prospects of having a teammate in his first season on the NASCAR series, he noted.

“Brett is a great racer and has been in this division for some time so with that experience he will be able to help me learn the cars and the tracks. He’ll also be able to tell me what other drivers may do (on the race track) since he has raced with them for so long.”

Leading Havens team will be veteran NASCAR crew chief, Charlie Wilson. Last season Wilson led Thompson’s team to a top-5 finish in the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship standings.

“Charlie has won championships on the West series and has crew chiefed on the (NASCAR) Nationwide Series. We’re all still going to work as a team here but Charlie is going to lead Braeden’s team in his races this year,” Thompson said.

With a strong team around him, Havens looks to be competitive in every race he enters.

“My goal this year (in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series) is to go out and win races. Also, I want to show my abilities and hope to get my name out in front of the right people to move my way up the racing ladder,” Havens said.

To reach those goals Havens began working with his new team informally last fall, he added.

“I went with the team to their last race in Phoenix and have been down to the shop to see how they work together. I will also be going to test before the season starts so I can show them my driving style and we all learn to work together on the race track.”

10 Things You Didn’t Know About NASCAR Pit Crews

Pit crews are instrumental parts of the NASCAR team. Functioning in the pit and behind the scenes, each member plays an important part in ensuring the car reaches the finish line. A well-oiled machine can consistently push a driver to the front of the race, but poor teamwork can break him when he's running neck and neck with his opponents. The following interesting facts are both fun and surprising for those who've never really paid close attention to the stuff that happens off the track.

Pit crew routines are not regulated by NASCAR
Although each crew essentially does the same routine, making a few minor changes of their own, they're not required by NASCAR to conduct the same sequence of actions. Because they don't have time to perform major work, strategy revolves around fueling and tire changes — the latter involves determining whether all four tires should be changed, or just the outside tires, which bear the most weight and pressure.

Crew members use liberal amounts of duct tape
The pros are always looking for a quick fix. During a race, a pit crew will use the strong, versatile tape to adjust body panels, hold parts together, fix hoses and hanging wires, and merely to mark where the jack post, left-front tire, and sign board will be located after the car hits the pit. It's such an important tool for the crew that it has earned its own nickname — "200 mph tape."

Crew members pound their cars with baseball bats and hammers
Another seemingly primitive way pit crews adjust their cars during races is to make use of baseball bats and hammers, pounding their uber-expensive machines when the situation calls for it. A misshapen body can affect how a car performs, causing it to fail to generate a sufficient amount of down force. With little time to spare, the strongest, quickest-swinging crew members take their best shots at the problem areas, impersonating their favorite baseball sluggers.

Crew members love piano bars
A heavily damaged car that's difficult to lift needs more than just the jack man. Instead, piano bars — long, sturdy bars; not the bar you visited during your last hotel stay — provide leverage for the crew to get the car off the ground so the members can do their work. Like duct tape and baseball bats, it's a simple tool with plenty of might.

Crew members exhibit higher heart rates on asphalt tracks than concrete tracks
Given the demands that come with being a member of a pit crew, it shouldn't come as a surprise that dealing with stress is a part of the job. But, as with any job, levels of stress can vary depending on the setting and the problems it presents. According to a study conducted by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, members exhibit higher heart rates on asphalt tracks than concrete tracks. This may have to do with the heat of the tracks caused by the blacktop surface.

Crew members can earn close to six-figure salaries
Of course, pay varies by position and responsibility. For example, Jason Myers, the car chief for Carl Edwards until his termination in 2009, earned $140,000 in 2008 not including bonuses and other compensation. He was second-in-command to the crew chief, who boasted a salary of $500,000. Guys in lower positions but with lots of responsibility — such as those who work in the shop, travel to the races, and work on Sundays — can earn in the neighborhood of $75,000.

Crew members may frequently change teams
A pit crew change for the second consecutive season enabled Kevin Harvick to take the lead in this year's Chase. Out of the running, Clint Boyer, a Richard Childress Racing teammate, lent his crew to give Harvick a boost for the stretch run. An efficient crew can make all the difference in the world, which is why of the best crew members in the biz are highly recruited by opposing teams. Essentially, they can play the field, seeking the best possible offer.

It's a year-round job
Like modern athletes, pit crew members train year-round, sparing just a couple of weeks for rest in December. Beginning in January, they practice pit stops before the start of the season, and then take it up a notch during the season, practicing two times per week and working out rigorously. It's a constant battle to improve their efficiency so they can reduce pit stop times.

Many pit crew members are former athletes
In recent years, NASCAR pit crews have emphasized athleticism to meet the physical demands of pit stops. As every aspect of the sport has become more competitive, shorter pit times have become essential for crews, so meticulously crafted routines have become the norm. Tony Stewart, for example, employs Mike Casto, a former wide receiver from Glenville State College. Mark Martin employs Aaron Walker, who spent five seasons in the NFL. It's a great way for ex-athletes to stay in a competitive field and utilize their physical strengths.

Pit crews have their own all-star event
Held annually in Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena, the NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge is a competition featuring seven pit crew members from each team. When given a signal, each team lifts the car, changes the tires, unloads 18 gallons of water substituting as fuel into a fuel tank, and upon approval from NASCAR, pushes the car 40 yards to finish the sequence. If "fuel" is spilled, too much "fuel" is left in the dump can, a jack isn't raised high enough, or lug nuts are improperly tightened, then penalties are given. Through the years, the notable pit crews of Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhardt have won multiple times.

2012 K&N Pro Series West Schedule Released

3 inaugural events on slate
of 15 races at 13 venues in 10 states

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule, a slate of 15 races featuring three inaugural events and a return to an historic track in California’s Central Valley, was announced today by NASCAR.

The schedule stretches from March to November and includes visits to 13 venues in 10 states as the West’s oldest stock car racing circuit celebrates its 59th season.

“The 2012 schedule for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series reflects the continued growth of the series, with the addition of some first-time events,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. “This slate of races will allow the drivers and teams to showcase their talent and provide exposure for their sponsors in key major markets across the country.”

The schedule for NASCAR’s top developmental series features the first series visit to the state of New Mexico, with an event at Sandia Motor Speedway in Albuquerque on Saturday, Sept. 29. The series will also make its first visit to Havasu 95 Speedway in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., on Saturday, April 14.

An inaugural race at Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway on Saturday, May 26, will mark one of four road course events on tap for 2012. In addition to the Minnesota race, the schedule includes visits to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah on Saturday, April 28; Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., on Saturday, June 23; and Portland (Ore.) International Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 26.

The 2012 season will feature a return on Saturday, May 5, to Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway, which the series last visited in 2006.

A key addition to the schedule is a second NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. The first combination race is set for Saturday, May 19, with a return engagement on the .875-mile track east of Des Moines on Friday, Aug. 3. Both events are in conjunction with NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Iowa Speedway.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West begins its 2012 campaign at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, March 3, and concludes the season back at the one-mile track on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Phoenix races are two of three series events in conjunction with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.

Other 2012 highlights include:
• Four other popular short-track events on the 2012 schedule include The Bullring at Las Vegas Motors Speedway on Saturday, June 2; Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., on Saturday, July 14; Colorado National Speedway in Dacono, Colo., on Saturday, July 28; and All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Full Week Of NASCAR Home Track Activities

It was a full week of activities for NASCAR Home tracks as the 2011 season concluded.

The Champions Race at Victory Lane Karting, a Champions Dinner at the NASCAR Hall of Fame and two banquets featuring the stars of the Whelen All-American Series and all of the NASCAR Regional Touring series provided a great backdrop to an unbelievable season for NASCAR Hometracks.

What is not to like about Crown Royal!

Back in April, NASCAR Race Mom was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the Crown Royal “Your Name Here 500,” a NASCAR race held at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. The winner of the scavenger hunt for charity was to be rewarded with a trip to Las Vegas to participate in the “Race Matt” competition.

Our team did not win that scavenger hunt, however, Crown Royal announced that all nine “influencers” would be invited to Las Vegas! What is not to like about Crown Royal!

Since I was already scheduled to cover the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Award Ceremony for Insider Racing News, I had to miss the first activity – The Wranglers National Finals Rodeo.

The National Finals Rodeo, organized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, is the premier championship rodeo event in the United States. Wrangler Jeans is the title sponsor for the 10-day event, commonly called the National Finals or NFR

The National Finals Rodeo was held at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in Paradise, Nevada. My fellow bloggers reported that they made their way to their seats just as the competition began.

The 6 events of the Rodeo were: Bareback Riding; Steer Wrestling; Team Roping; Saddle Back Riding; Tie-Down Roping; and Bull Riding.

I missed a truly exciting event and heard that the crowd cheered most for the entertainment value and strong performances, and not necessarily individual Cowboys. The riders can win more than $173,000 for winning their category and the competition was truly stiff!

Another . . . . What’s not to like about Crown Royal ---- Each time one of the Crown Royal Riders scored 90 points or more (rodeo scoring is based on a scale of 100), Crown Royal made a charitable donation of $2,000 to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. The Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund benefits cowboys and their families in the event of catastrophic injuries resulting from professional rodeo activities.

The Rodeo literally took over the MGM Grand as the 2011 NFR Headquarters. The Crown Royal Golden Buckle Zone featured live music, dancing, shows, shopping, guest appearances, drink specials, and drawings. I was truly surprised at how big the MGM was and wandered aimlessly lost on more than one occasion.

The next day was dedicated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to race against Matt Kenseth at the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Matthew Roy Kenseth (born March 10, 1972) is a NASCAR driver. He finished fourth in the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. I had enjoyed his speech just the night before at the Awards Ceremony.

All the bloggers boarded the bus to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday morning. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, located approximately 15 miles from “The Strip” in Las Vegas, is a 1.5 mile tri-oval. It hosts a number of racing series including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series. Kenseth captured the Sprint Cup Pole here in March of 2011.

Next, we amateurs signed a mountain of paperwork and releases, before the Richard Petty Driving Experience (RPE) would put us in a NASCAR race car for an adrenaline pumping thrill of a lifetime that gets you as close to being in the race as you will ever get! These programs are offered year-round with twenty tracks nationwide.

Our classroom instructor, Tony, gave us bloggers a quick crash course regarding the ins and outs of driving a NASCAR at over 100 MPH. The training included both lecture and videos. Then attired in our RPE firesuits, we nervously walked out to the track.

To report that NASCAR Race Mom was anxious would be an understatement. I was downright scared. However, I was the oldest blogger of the group and wanted to represent my generation well! (You and me Mark Martin!)

The RPE rules were simple: Obey the lights. We were coached to follow the race car ahead of us and keep up with him the best we could. If he flashed a green light – you are going too slow; if he flashed the yellow light you were going to fast; if there were no flashing lights your speed was perfect.

The Richard Petty Staff informed us that our #17 Matt Kenseth Crown Royal racecars were capable of driving about 170 miles per hour. However, we would be limited to the 130-135 range. The blogger with the fastest time would receive a $2,500 check to give to a charity: either Operation Patriot or Honoring Heroes . Really - what’s not to like about Crown Royal!

Blogger Mike Arone, who ran about 130 mph, won the challenge. However, the man to beat was Matt Kenseth. Matt put down the high speed of 168 mph, and of course out ran us all! I was not the fastest on the track, but I was not the slowest either. The experience really supplied me with an altered and more cognizant perspective as to what a real racer faces in each race. I would recommend the Richard Petty Driving experience to all NASCAR fans! It would be a great off-season activity that I would love to tackle again.

After my electrifying ten laps on the banked Las Vegas Speedway, Matt Kenseth was available for interviews. We chatted about his son, Ross. The eighteen-year-old had issues while attempting to qualify for the Snowball Derby. However, the younger Kenseth would race his way into the main event and managed a podium finish for the prestigious main event.

It did NASCAR Race Mom’s heart good to hear Matt detail how Ross had to keep his behavior in check and grades high in order to be allowed the privilege of racing. I added that we followed a similar dogma with my son Moses Smith who races in the K&N Pro Series West.

A last, what is not to like about Crown Royal; there were no losers in our group. We all had fun and additionally learned a lot about rodeos, NASCAR racing, and the good works of Crown Royal.

Year-End Ceremony Spotlights Touring Series Title Winners

2011 Most Popular Drivers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Past, present and future were celebrated Saturday night at the NASCAR Hall of Fame as the six champions from NASCAR’s developmental series were honored in the Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala.

The festivities featured the champions and top drivers from all of NASCAR’s North American regional touring series, who gathered for the special year-end celebration.

The 2011 champions included Max Gresham (NASCAR K&N Pro Series East), Greg Pursley (NASCAR K&N Pro Series West), Scott Steckly (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series), Germán Quiroga (NASCAR Mexico Series), Ron Silk (NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour) and George Brunnhoelzl III (NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour).

"These six series represent the future of our sport," said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. "There is some remarkable talent on hand tonight that provided close, exciting competition all season long."

• Pursley of Newhall, Calif., captured his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West title in dominating fashion with six victories in the season’s first eight races.
• Steckly of Milverton, Ontario, Canada, picked up his second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship after winning his first in 2008.

Enrique Contreras III (NASCAR Mexico Series) and Louis-Philippe Dumoulin (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series collected Rookie of the Year honors while Sunoco Rookie of the Year Awards were presented to Austin Pack (NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour), Patrick Emerling (NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour), Alex Bowman (NASCAR K&N Pro Series East) and Dylan Kwasniewski (NASCAR K&N Pro Series West).

Additionally, the Most Popular Driver Awards for each series were also presented during the ceremony. The six drivers honored with the prestigious award – voted on by fans online at NASCAR.com – were Justin Bonsignore in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Jason Myers of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, Jorge Arteaga in the NASCAR Mexico Series, Jason White in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Moses Smith of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West and Chase Elliott from the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

The top 10 drivers and car owners from each of NASCAR’s developmental series also were recognized during the gala event – which featured Mike Joy and Dr. Dick Berggren of NASCAR on FOX and SPEED as co-hosts. The awards banquet was streamed live online in three languages – English French and Spanish – at www.nascarhometracks.com, the official online home of NASCAR’s developmental series.

Special award and year-end contingency award winners were honored Saturday morning at the Grand Champions Breakfast.

The awards celebration capped a week of festivities in the Charlotte area aimed at providing the top drivers and track operators in NASCAR’s weekly and touring series an up close and personal look at the hub of stock-car racing. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet on Friday honored champions from across North America in the series that is NASCAR’s grassroots foundation.

We just got back from the NASCAR Hall of Fame. It was nice. All the fans appeared to be really blissful and in awe! For us, people who are at the track and in the “pits” approximately fifteen weekends per year, the exhibits were nice but not awe inspiring. However, this is a museum well worth the visit, very hands on, and entertaining.

Thousands of decisions are made every week when developing, testing, and racing a car. Here guests can see how teams determine if parts are reusable, learn about how lessons from previous races play a critical role in setting up the car for the next race. NASCAR Race Mom (NRM) has had a hectic December. I just returned from Las Vegas after covering the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony! Tomorrow we are flying to Charlotte, NC for the 2011 NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala, to be held on December 10th in the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s Crown Ballroom in Charlotte, N.C.

NRM has gathered a plethora of information to post on this blog; however time has run out. Therefore, allow me to post a couple of photos as a trailer to the stories that are to come.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Max Gresham added another trophy to his mantle on Wednesday after winning the Fourth Annual NASCAR Touring & Weekly Series Champions/Media Karting Challenge as Champions Week got into full swing.

Gresham, the reigning NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion, started dead last in the 14-kart field and took the lead with just under two minutes remaining in the 15-minute contest at Charlotte’s Victory Lane Indoor Karting that pitted the seven NASCAR champions in town for the week against members of the local media.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Gresham, the 18-year-old out of Griffin, Ga. “It was cool to race against the champions from the other series and it was even more cool to beat them.”

George Brunnhoelzl III, champion of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, finished second and was the race leader at a competition caution with five minutes remaining in the race.

“If we didn’t have that competition caution, then I might have been able to hold Gresham off because I had a bit of a lead,” said Brunnhoelzl. “After that, he was just too fast.”

The NASCAR Mexico Series presented by Toyota champion Germán Quiroga finished third after a spirited battle with Brunnhoelzl down the stretch.

After a one-hour practice session to get used to the karts and track, everyone got lined up for the main event. The championship race was a timed event. The seven fastest media members started up front, followed by the NASCAR champions, inverted from slowest to fastest based on their best times during practice.

The event is part of a weeklong series of special activities in the Charlotte area for drivers and track representatives leading up to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet on Friday, Dec. 9, and the NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala on Saturday, Dec. 10. Both ceremonies along with a Red Carpet pre-show will be streamed live on www.nascarhometracks.com in English, French and Spanish. Coverage will get underway at 5 p.m. ET each evening.

Among the champions Philip Morris, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion finished fourth followed by Greg Pursley (NASCAR K&N Pro Series West), Ron Silk (NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour) and Scott Steckly (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series). Jeff Wackerlin of the Motor Racing Network finished fourth overall and was the top-finishing media member.

“Getting to the front wasn’t too bad,” Gresham said. “I was really concerned with getting around (Quiroga). He was hitting every line that he needed to, but I eventually got by.”

Gresham joins Brian Loftin (2009), Ryan Truex (2010) and Bobby Santos (2011) as winners of the Karting Challenge.

Later Wednesday evening, the series champions will be honored at a special dinner affair in The Great Hall within the NASCAR Hall of Fame complex.

Dominic Fugere (@@sportengueule) will announce the French-language coverage of the NASCAR Touring Series Awards Gala. Fugere is the host and analyst for NASCAR coverage on ESPN’ French-Canadian affiliate RDS.

The first order of business will be to determine bragging rights on the track in the Fourth Annual NASCAR Champions/Media Karting Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Victory Lane Indoor Karting in Charlotte. The seven regional touring series champions and the Whelen All-American Series national champion will battle each other along with several media members. Past winners of the event are Brian Loftin (2009), Ryan Truex (2010) and Bobby Santos (2011).

Many special functions are scheduled throughout the week including the prestigious NASCAR Whelen All-American Series State/Province Champions Dinner to be held on Thursday, Dec. 8 at Hendrick Motorsports. NASCAR Race Mom to Race Matt!

I don’t know if you remember or not, but back in April, I was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the Crown Royal 'Capture the Crown ' event.

The ‘Capture the Crown’ was a two-day-event held at the Richmond International Raceway during the Crown Royal “Your Name Here” 400. The program featured nine online ‘influencers’ competing in team play in a Scavenger Hunt to accomplish tasks for points. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the race was named the winner. NASCAR Race Mom (NRM) had a blast!

Well, luckily it appears that lightning can strike twice! NASCAR Race Mom is excitingly getting ready for her flight to Las Vegas tomorrow. Crown Royal has arranged another once-of-a-lifetime experience!

This weekend, NASCAR Race Mom will be meeting up with writers from The Smoking Jacket; Complex; Midwest Sports Fans; Hot For NASCAR; The Rugged; Bleacher Report; Gunaxin and Daddy Tips.

The Itinerary: Friday night is reserved for the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to check out the Crown Royal Riders. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending how you look at it, NASCAR Race Mom had previously been invited to the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series black-tie Awards Ceremony, which is held at the same time. Therefore, I will have to skip the rodeo!

We are scheduled to go to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday morning. There we will be joined by the three Crown Royal “Race Matt” Sweepstakes Grand Prize Winners. We all will participate in the Richard Petty Driving Experience and for a timed trial race against NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Matt Kenseth! The media member with the fastest time will be able to donate $2,500 from Crown Royal to a charity: either Operation Patriot or Honoring Heroes.

During the weekend, Crown Royal will also be treating us to numerous fine dining experiences at Wolfgang Puck, Sea Blue, Centrifuge and more. Touring Series Will Intergrate National Series Structure

NASCAR announced today that the points system all NASCAR national series began using this year will be instituted in the regional touring level for 2012.

The points system was simplified to make it easier for fans, competitors and the industry to understand.

Beginning in 2012, the system will be integrated into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and NASCAR Mexico Series.

The new structure awards points in one-point increments. As an example, race winners earn 43 points, plus three bonus points for the win. Drivers also can earn an extra point for leading a lap and leading the most laps, bringing the race-winning total to a possible maximum of 48 points.

All other drivers in a finishing order are separated by one-point increments. A second-place finisher earns 42 points, a third-place driver 41 points, and so on.

“Implementing the simplified points system at the regional touring level will make the points structure consistent with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. “The change at the national level was welcomed in the industry this year and has provided a points system that is much easier for everyone to understand.”

This year’s NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup ™ demonstrated that use of the new points structure is viable with a shorter schedule, such as with each touring series.

“Considering the tight competition in NASCAR’s touring series, we anticipate that with the new points system in place we will see close championship battles similar to the ones this year in all NASCAR national series,” Silbermann said.

The move to bring the simplified points system from NASCAR’s national series to the regional touring level is part of an effort to integrate uniform race formats and procedures throughout the NASCAR ranks. Earlier this year, two race procedures were changed to bring the touring series in line with the national series. One of those procedures stipulated that if a green-white-checkered finish is necessary, a maximum of three attempts will be made. The other change directed that on all restarts, passing will not be permitted until the car reached the start-finish line.

In some cases, race procedures developed at the touring level have been adopted at the national level. In 2009, the double-file restarts that had come about in the regional series, became a part of the national series race procedures.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR has announced the entertainment and emcees for the 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet and NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala, held Dec. 9-10 in the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s Crown Ballroom in Charlotte, N.C.

Musical performer Edwin McCain will provide the entertainment for both programs. Originally from Greenville, S.C., the platinum-selling singer/songwriter has produced popular hits like “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More.” The Edwin McCain Band is currently touring in support of McCain’s 10th album, Mercy Bound.

“I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to perform at the upcoming NASCAR banquets in Charlotte next month,” McCain said. “As a NASCAR fan and someone who loves auto racing in general, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the skill all of the drivers possess and the hard work required off them both on and off the track.”

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet will be Friday, Dec. 9. Moses Smith, driver of the No. 16 NAPA Filters/Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry would finish out the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season third in the points race. In the fourteen races in the 2011 season, Smith recorded five top-five finishes and nine top-tens. This season he had his career best average finish in the five years he has competed in the NKPS West with two second place finishes coming at the short track of All American Speedway and the road course at Miller Motorsports Park.

Smith and the No. 16 NAPA Filters Toyota team spent the bulk of the nearly three-hour long practice session getting reacquainted with the 'new' Phoenix International Raceway. During the summer, the one-mile track was reconfigured.

Most noticeably was the back stretch where the dog-leg curve between turn 2 and 3 was pushed out 95-feet and the dog–leg tightened from 800 to 500 feet. "This is a weird track," Smith radioed in to the NAPA Filters/Hasa team. The back stretch was often compared to a roller coaster ride by many of the teams. Smith fought a tight race car for most of the practice session. He qualified on the inside of row fifteen.

"Green, green, green!" said spotter Mike David to begin the Casino Arizona "125". During the first caution at lap 12, Smith radioed in that the #16 was still tight. The No. 16 NAPA Filters Toyota came to pit road for adjustments at lap 16. Back underway, Smith radioed in that he was down on power and asked crew chief Mario Isola if he thought there might be a spark plug loose. He continued to report that the Camry was tight 'center off'. During the caution at lap 33, Smith returned to pit road for more adjustments on the right rear and the track bar.

Smith climbed thru traffic and was in 23th at the half-way break. At lap 72, Smith reported in that the No. 16 NAPA Filters Toyota was a tick snug coming out of turn four. When the caution came out at lap 96, Smith was now 16th on the board. He would return to pit road at lap 100 for additional adjustments. Smith would take the checkered flag in 17th.

Kenseth / Crown Royal Give Back for Veteran’s Day

Before hitting the track this weekend for the “Kobalt Tools 500,” NASCAR Champion Matt Kenseth and Crown Royal hosted a great event at the Luke Air Force Base yesterday to support the Phoenix-based charity, Packages from Home. The organization is located on the grounds of the Phoenix Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

The mission of “Packages From Home” is to send care and comfort packages to deployed American military heroes who are stationed in active duty theaters around the world, as well as to facilitate activities that elevate morale of all veterans. While donations from the general public make up majority of their budget, fund-raising events help to fill in the gaps.

To kick-off “The Crown Royal Heroes Project*”—an on-going commitment from the whisky brand to recognize, honor and give back to America’s finest; Matt and adult consumers stuffed care packages for troops serving overseas this holiday season.

For every Camo Bag stuffed, Crown Royal pledged to donate $10.00 to Packages from Home. At the event, Matt and his helpers were able to stuff care packages for troops to make a donation of $5,000!

Matt Kenseth is looking forward to his next race at the Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. “Phoenix is going to be very different this weekend than the track we’ve been used to running in the past. Basically, we’ll look over our notes from the test and start from there to work on our set-ups throughout practices. The new layout of the track is very unique, so it’s going to be interesting for the fans to watch and for us to drive. This weekend is kind of an unknown for everyone. We got to test there but the track is so slick and there was only one lane, but I know that they’ve been working to widen the groove out, so I’m looking forward to seeing how different it is this weekend.” Kenseth’s strategy appears to be working. Kenseth posted second fastest time in the first Sprint Cup practice.

Jeremiah Weed Event Raises $5,000For The Air Force Enlisted Village Charity

Seventeen lucky NASCAR fans received a very permanent reminder of their trip to Talladega Superspeedway last weekend, a free tattoo from Jeremiah Weed Flavored Malt Beverages.

NASCAR Championship contender #17 Matt Kenseth, who now sits in second place in the Chase standings, and the flavored malt beverage maker teamed up to offer free permanent tattoos to race fans for a good cause. Fans could choose from a number of designs including Matt’s signature, a No. 17 or a Jeremiah Weed Lightening Lemonade can.

When all was said and done, seventeen (seriously ironic and unplanned) adult fans got tatted up to show their loyalty.

Matt’s spotter Mike Calinoff was one of the seventeen; talk about dedication to the team!

Jeremiah Weed was so inspired by the turnout; they increased their donation to an overall sum of $5,000 to The Air Force Enlisted Village charity, which is committed to providing safe, secure and dignified homes for indigent surviving spouses of retired Air Force personnel. Results at All American Speedway

Starting on the inside of row six, Moses Smith, who drives the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing, made his way towards the front of the field of NASCAR K&N Pro Series West cars. By lap 88 of the scheduled 150-lap race, he was in sixth. With twenty-five laps to go, Smith had navigated the Hasa Toyota into the fourth spot. He moved into third with ten laps to go.

A late race caution set the field up for their first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. As the cars came to the checkered flag, Smith would get turned. He recovered the No. 16 Hasa Toyota to bring home a seventeenth place finish. With one race left of the 2011 West Series season, Smith is third in the championship points.

“The Hasa Toyota was good,” said Smith. “It took a little bit to get going. We were fast on the inside as well as running on the outside groove. The lap down cars held their line which really helped me. It looked like we were going to have a good finish when I got turned coming to the checkered flag. That’s short track racing.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Pink was a prominent color in the NASCAR garage areas at this weekend with the Touring series joining the overall campaign by NASCAR of “going pink” in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On a national level, NASCAR's efforts over the weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway aimed to build awareness and raise funds for breast cancer-aimed charitable organizations. Charlotte included several tributes by NASCAR Whelen Souhern Modified Tour teams for their event there, including Andy Seuss, who changed the color of his No. 11 to pink.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif., meanwhile, featured several teams that incorporated the theme into the paint schemes of their cars and officials wearing special pink lanyards.

Moses Smith, who added pink to the look of his No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Filters Toyota, participated in a recent charity event for Breast Cancer Awareness held by his sponsor, White Flyer.

An effort by Paul Pedroncelli Jr. involved several fundraisers for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. He also displayed his No. 0 Lee’s Auto Body Chevrolet, painted with a special pink paint scheme, at the fundraisers.

The No. 59 Beat Cancer/MTFX Graphics Chevrolet of Jason Fensler also featured a special campaign at Roseville, with a tribute to beating cancer. The Team Cass Racing Chevrolet featured the awareness ribbons of several different types of cancer.

Team Coming Home to AAS

ANTELOPE, California — Three-time NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Most Popular Driver, Moses Smith, will pilot the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing at All American Speedway. He will take the green flag on October 15th as the series makes its second appearance at the short track located at the Placer County Fairgrounds.

The veteran driver has four top-five finishes in seven starts at Bill McAnally Racing’s home track. He retains the record for the most top-ten finishes at this .333-mile high banked oval in the heart of Northern California. Smith is currently second in the chase for the series championship with only two races left of the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season. Smith and the Hasa Toyota team finished fourth in the series last season.

“I am really looking forward to racing at AAS, “said Smith. “It’s always great racing, and a great fan base. Also check out my new paint scheme for the month of October…”

The Hasa Toyota team is coming back stronger than ever to the BMR team’s home track. Last spring, Smith finish in second bringing fans to their feet as he took the checkered flag.

SPEED Updates K&N Pro Series Broadcast Schedule Remainder Of 2011 Races To Air Thursdays At 7 p.m.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The remaining five NASCAR K&N Pro Series race broadcasts on SPEED will move from 6 p.m. ET to 7 p.m. on Thursdays starting Sept. 15 with the most recent NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event from Greenville Pickens Speedway.

Top-Five Finish In Spokane

Moses Smith, pilot of the No.16 NAPA Filters/Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry and the Hasa team brought home a fifth place finish at Spokane County Raceway (SCR).

Smith holds his position running in second in the chase for the series 2011 championship. Thru twelve races this season, he has five top-five finishes and nine top-tens.

Smith put the NAPA Filters Toyota in the top-ten of the fastest cars during the practice sessions. He then went on to qualify in seventh to start the 200-lap race. At the end of the first 25 laps, Smith moved into sixth. "The car is tighter than I would like," he radioed in to crew chief Mario Isola. "Hang in there bud. We'll get it better at the break," said Isola.

There was a mandatory break at lap 102. Smith would restart the second half now in eighth. "Come on Hot Rod!" said Isola. "Let's go get them." At lap 140, Smith reported in that the No. 16 NAPA/Hasa Toyota was "tight, tight, tight". After Moses' adjustments made from inside the car didn't help, Smith was called to pit road. The team put some rounds in the right rear of the car. He reported in at lap 160 'we gained but I'm too free off". Not losing any positions, Smith came in under caution and the team made further adjustments including removing a bit of tape as the car was running hot. "That second change didn't do anything," Smith radioed. "I don't have anything to get by the field." Focused on the front, Smith continued his charge and would gain four positions before taking the checkered flag.

"I was tight all night'" said Smith. "It was good racing. I ran with someone side by side all night. This is a cool track. It needs some polishing but I wouldn't mind racing here again."

"We're pointed in the right direction. I'm looking forward to going back to tracks I'm familiar with (All American Speedway and Phoenix International). With the championship out of our reach, our plan is to hang in there and finish the season second in points. We'll see what happens."

McAnally team grows to five for Pro Series West race.
Waltrip signs on for Toyota/TTC 150 Saturday in Montana.

Bill McAnally Racing of Antelope will have five entries in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Toyota/TTC 150 today at Montana Raceway Park in Kalispell, including two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip.

Waltrip has raced for BMR before. He finished second in Phoenix last November. The co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing has one victory — at Pikes Peak in Colorado in 1997 — and three top-five finishes in five Pro Series West starts.

He joins BMR regulars Moses Smith and Eric Holmes, who are second and fourth in Pro Series West points. Holmes is a three-time series champion.

Also driving for BMR today are Cameron Hayley and Ben Kennedy. Hayley, 15, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is making his Pro Series West debut. This will be the second Pro Series West start for Kennedy, 18, a great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr.

Team Finish in 6th at Colorado National Speedway

The No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota team came to Colorado National Speedway to win the Toyota/NAPA “150”. The driver from Bill McAnally Racing, Moses Smith’s night netted the team a sixth place finish.

Smith was fourth quick during the first practice session and fifth in the second. He qualified the No. 16 NAPA Filters/Hasa Toyota Camry in fifth for the 150-lap race. Smith ran in the top five until lap 55, when he experienced brake issues and fell back to sixth. At lap 61, the no. 16 NAPA Filters Toyota was in seventh.

During the second caution at lap 146, Smith told crew chief Mario Isola that he was staying off his brakes as much as possible. Isola replied “It’s going to be a green-white-checkered finish. Use it up!” Smith took the checkered flag in sixth.

“It was a good race,” said Smith. “I didn’t have anything for the front of the field. I ended up playing defense. We’re holding on to second in the chase so we’ll go on to the next race.”

The teams from BMR will race next at Montana Raceway Park in Kalispell, Montana on August 13th for the Toyota/TTC “150”. This will be the NAPA/Hasa team’s second visit to Flathead Valley where they finished on the podium in third at the inaugural visit.

“I really like the Montana track,” said Smith. ”The fans are great. When the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West comes there, it’s a big event. The racing should be good. I like the Toyota Camry we’re bringing to the race. It should be good. I’m looking forward to it.”

The television broadcast of the Colorado race will be on SPEED Channel on Thursday August 25th at 6 pm ET. The broadcast of the Montana race will be on Thursday September 1st at the same time. Please check your local listings.

Moses Finishes In Fourth

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Luis Martinez slipped into the lead on the last lap and won the Bi-Mart Salute To The Troops 125 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Portland International Raceway.

Martinez alertly took advantage when race leader David Mayhew spun in turn 12 on the final lap around Portland’s 1.967 road racing gem. It was the final drama of a green-white-checkers finish.

Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for the K&N Pro Series East and West programs, as well as for the NASCAR Canadian Tires Series. The bias-ply tires Goodyear supplies the three series come from the same line, allowing competitors in NASCAR’s top development programs to race interchangeably without the need to learn about differing tire packages.

Eric Holmes, the former series champion, finished second to Martinez, just .352 of a second behind the winner. Derek Thorn started 11th and finished third. Moses Smith was fourth and Dave Smith took fifth. Martinez averaged 93.424 on his best qualifying lap.

It was a big points night for everyone except championship leader Greg Pursley. Pursley led the race when mechanical woes struck, knocking him out of the race on lap 46. He finished 26th in the big 30-car field. Pursley, who set a record with his fast start this season, still leads with 1,550 points. Moses Smith is next with 1,317.

Smith and the Hasa Toyota team Focused on Portland Smith returns to the road course Antelope, CA– The No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry, driven by Moses Smith brought home a fifteenth place finish at his last run at Portland International Raceway after having a late in the race electrical issue. Smith and the Hasa team look to turn their Portland bad luck around as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series returns to the 1.967-mile road course. Smith has raced at the nearly perfectly flat twelve-turn road course which sits a short distance from the famous Columbia River in both a stock car and in an open-wheeled car.

This is the third time since 1986 that the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West has come to PIR. In 2008, track renovations were complete as two turns were widened and the track repaved with new asphalt. “The passing is tough but I think we will do pretty well,” said Smith. “The No. 16 Hasa Toyota team is focused on continuing to close the gap in the chase for the championship. We’re looking forward to getting onto the road course in Portland and having a great finish.” Smith is second in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series championship point standings. The Bi-Mart Salute to the Troops “125” is a two day event with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West teams qualifying and racing on Sunday July 24th.

The event, which will be televised to a national audience on SPEED at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 18, marks the third and final road course event of the season for the series.
Greg Pursley, who has a commanding 298-point lead in the championship standings, will be looking to keep his momentum rolling and add to the six wins he has scored in eight races this season. One of those wins was a victory on the road course at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah in April.

Second in the standings is series veteran Moses Smith. With a road racing background, Smith is hopeful of breaking through with his first career series win at Portland. Michael Self and Luis Martinez Jr. – who are third and fourth in points, respectively – are also looking for their first career win.

They are not the only ones hungry for a victory, however. With Pursley’s domination, it has left all the other series regulars without a win this season. Fifth in the standings is three-time series champion Eric Holmes – who had five wins a year ago, but has yet to visit Victory Lane in 2011.

In addition to the series regulars who will tackle the left and right turns on the 1.967-mile Portland track, the entry list is comprised of a contingent of drivers who each year focus primarily on the road course races. They include Brandon Davis, who won the Coors Light Pole at Infineon Raceway last month; Tom Klauer, who had a top-10 finish in his series debut a year ago at Portland; Kyle Kelley; Scott Ivie and Garland Self. The list also includes the legendary Hershel McGriff, who at the age of 83 has opted to just run the road course events in the series.

This event will also mark the return of Andrew Ranger to Portland International Raceway. Ranger, a two-time champion in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, competed at PIR with the Champ Car World Series in 2005 and 2006, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively.

Previous road course events this year were at Miller Motorsports Park and Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., – where NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Joey Logano took the win.

Podium Finish At Evergreen Speedway

Moses Smith, driver of the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing, finished 3rd at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. He remains solidly in second place in the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship.

With the second half of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West 2011 season underway, Smith made his third visit to the podium. Smith has made two previous visits to Evergreen Speedway with both being top-ten finishes. “It’s challenging track in that it has a lot of bumps and dips that upset the race car. It really makes you work at it,” said Smith.

On Saturday, the No. 16 Hasa Toyota team took to the track for two practice sessions and qualifying. Smith put the Hasa/NAPA Filters entry inside of row five to start the race. ”We didn’t qualifying where we wanted to but we have 200 laps to move up.” At lap 70, Smith was running in the top-five. He gained one more position at lap 90.

There was a half-way break at lap 100 at which time crew chief Mario Isola and the Hasa team went to work putting on fresh tires and making minor adjustments. Back to green flag racing, Smith brushed the wall at lap 122. He kept pace and was still in the top-five. With less than twenty laps to go, the second thru fourth place cars went three wide going into turn one. There was a lot of close racing and more contact with the wall, but Smith is able to continue; now running in fourth. With less than five to go, Smith battled with his teammate Eric Holmes and moved into third, taking the checkered flag.

“We had some good competition here,” continued Smith. “Side by side racing for most of the 200 laps made it an exciting race. The Hasa Toyota ran great and we’re back on the podium. We’ll take it!”

Set your DVRs. The NKNP West Series race from Infineon can be seen on Thursday July 14th at 3 pm PT on SPEED Channel. Catch the race from Toyota Speedway on Thursday July 21st and the upcoming race from Evergreen Speedway on Thursday July 28th.

The next race will be on July 24th at Portland International Raceway. Smith and the Hasa team have made two previous visits to the road course in Portland.

Series Returns To Monroe Track hosted 50 NASCAR K&N West events between 1964 & 2008

Race:This event is the eighth of 14 events on the 2011 schedule for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

Procedure:
The starting field is 28 cars, including provisionals. The first 24 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials. The remaining four spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 200 laps (125 miles).

Track:
Evergreen Speedway is a semi-banked .646-mile paved oval with turns banked eight degrees and four degrees banking in the straights. This event marks a return to the historic speedway that hosted 50 series events between 1964 and 2008.

Records:
Qualifying: Mike Duncan, Aug. 4, 2007, 99.691 mph, 23.328 seconds; Race: Roy Smith, July 12, 1981, 86.197 mph, 1 hour 29 minutes 56 seconds.

Pursley winning at pace not seen in recent history:
With five wins in the first seven races this season, Greg Pursley is notching victories at a pace not seen in recent history in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

The series record for wins in season is held by Hershel McGriff, who had 12 victories in a 30-race season in 1972. Jack McCoy came close to that with 10 wins the following year and Jim Insolo had nine wins in 1978, which featured a 22-race schedule.

Since then, however, the most wins by a driver in a season is six – accomplished by Doug George in 1995 and Brendan Gaughan in 2001.

With a 14-race schedule this season, Pursley would have to win all the races in the second half of the season to tie McGriff’s record for wins in a season. While that may seem out of reach, Pursley could get a shot at McGriff’s record of five consecutive wins, which was also set in 1972. Pursley had three in a row in the first half of the year.

Tough battle for positions behind Pursley:
This event at Evergreen Speedway marks the start of the second half of the season for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

Series veteran Moses Smith has maintained the second spot and has 992 points. The four drivers behind him, meanwhile, are separated by just 15 points. David Mayhew is third with 934, Michael Self is fourth with 931, Luis Martinez Jr., is fifth with 921 and Brett Thompson is sixth with 919. Just 37 markers back in seventh is three-time series champion Eric Holmes at 882 points. Teenager Dylan Kwasniewski, the leading Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, is ninth with 828; followed by fellow rookie Ryan Philpott at 777.

Race Notes:
Barkshire back in action: Jeff Barkshire, who scored his only career series win as a rookie when the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West last visited Evergreen Speedway in 2008, is set to return to competition. The Auburn, Wash., driver went on to win the Sunoco Rookie of the Year title in ‘08 – but since then has only made four series starts.

Local competitor:
The entry list for the Evergreen 200 includes local driver Jason Fraser of Snohomish, Wash. Fraser made his first and only series start at Monroe in 2007, starting fifth and finishing 14th.

It was the best of times, it was the worse of time . . . . . Saturday's race at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale brings this quote to mind. The #16 Hasa Pool Products / NAPA Filter Toyota Camry was just too loose to generate any real speed. This made the Southern California Toyota Dealers "200" very frustrating for both the driver and crew. However, in a tight point’s battle for second place, NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Driver, Moses Smith found himself battling with the two drivers directly behind him in the championship points standing. The side by side / nose to tail racing lasted right up to the checkered flag, with Moses just edging across the finish line ahead of the other two competitors.

Smith’s twelfth place finish allowed him to remain second in the K&N Pro Series West Point’s Standings. His action filled performance also thrilled the five hundred Hasa customers in the audience who were on hand to cheer on their favorite driver.

“It was definitely a tough night. Sometimes you have a defensive game, sometimes an offensive game, but tonight, we had no game. Although it turned out to be a good points night, the HASA team was there to Race, and we just didn’t have it. Although I was a little bummed after the race, the HASA team didn’t seem to be discourage, and are just looking forward to our next race…these guys are awesome!”

The Southern California Toyota Dealers 200 will air on SPEED on Thursday, July 21 at 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) The next NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race will be Sunday, July 10 at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington.

Fans will have an opportunity to chat with drivers and get autographs during a Meet and Greet from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott in nearby Monrovia. Team haulers are slated to head from the hotel to the track in a cavalcade, beginning at 6 p.m.

West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner
The West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction and dinner at the Azusa Greens Country Club in Azusa, Calif., on Friday, July 1.

Those slated for induction include Marvin Burke, Louis “Lou” Mangini, Chuck Parko, Al Schmidhamer, George Seeger and Chuck Stevenson, Cary Agajanian, Roger McCluskey, Joe Ruttman and Tim Williamson.

Irwindale, Calif. - - One day before they’ll be dukeing it out 3-wide on the banks of Toyota Speedway, the drivers, crews, and race cars of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series will be on hand at the Monrovia, California, Courtyard by Marriott at 700 Huntington Drive at the 210 freeway to meet the fans and depart on the now-traditional NASCAR Route 66 Hauler Cavalcade to Toyota Speedway.

“We’ll have upwards of thirty colorful NASCAR race car haulers lined-up all the way up Monterey Avenue (next to the Marriott) and set to take off for the Speedway,” said track GM/VP Bob DeFazio. “So we’re inviting all our great fans to join us at the hotel from 5 to 6 o’clock to meet the drivers, get an autograph, take pictures of the kids with the pros, and get a discount coupon for Saturday night’s huge NASCAR race and Independence Day fireworks show.”

Smith Set To Make 60th Start

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Moses Smith is set to make his 60th career start in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West on Saturday, July 2, at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) in the Southern California Toyota Dealers 200 presented by King Taco.

It’s appropriate that Smith, who drives the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Filters Toyota for Bill McAnally Racing, celebrate this milestone at Irwindale. He made his series debut at the state-of-the-art half-mile track on July 22, 2006.

Since then, the 35-year-old former open-wheel competitor from Tempe, Ariz., has registered 14 top-five and 35 top-10 finishes. He is currently second in the championship standings. But he’s still looking for that elusive first career series win. Smith has come close on several occasions, especially earlier this season when he had back-to-back runner-up finishes at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif., and Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.

He knows that first win could come this weekend at Toyota Speedway, where he has registered a string of strong finishes. Of his six starts at Irwindale, Smith finished out of the top 10 only once. His best finish there was fourth last year.

“Irwindale’s always a fun track,” said Smith, who has won the Most Popular Driver Award in the series the past three years. “We’ve had some pretty good finishes at Irwindale. Hopefully, we’ll get our first win there. It would be cool to have our first start and our first win there.”

The #16 Hasa Pool Products / NAPA Filter Toyota Camry felt right straight off the trailer after arriving at the Infineon Raceway on 06/24/2011. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West was in Sonoma for a combination event with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Infineon Raceway has hosted twenty-one series races since 1978.

Driver, Moses Smith recorded ninth fastest in the first practice and seventh fastest in the last practice. The team was looking forward to qualifying for the Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200.”

Unfortunately, as Smith took the green flag on his qualifying run, his motor failed (threw a rod through the block). The resulting “no time” on the qualifying sheet and required engine change put the #16 Hasa Pool Products / NAPA Filter Toyota Camry to the back of the forty-one car field.

The Infineon race which typically attracts one of the largest entry fields of the year, can easily contribute to a driver losing ground in championship points standings. Consequently, the poor qualifying result could have proved very detrimental to the team.

“Whoopsie daisy.....blew the darn thing up....didn't even get a lap in. Starting last tomorrow....Hard Charger Award, here I come.” Smith Facebook'ed after his qualifying attempt. The #16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Filters team was able to change the engine before leaving the track after qualifying. Starting the race with an untested motor, Smith knew that maneuvering the winding road course in Sonoma from the back would require finesse, patience, and luck.

However, the race did not proceed exactly as planned. The team completed their scheduled fuel stop as planned on lap twenty-two. After moving up into the top-ten by lap thirty, it became necessary to pit again for tires, in an attempt to improve the race car’s handling. With almost half of the race completed, Smith restarted the race from the back of the field again.

Moses had worked his way back up into seventh place on lap fifty-seven of the sixty-four lapper when a tap from a competitor sent the #16 Hasa Pool Products /NAPA Filter Toyota Camry into a full 360 spin. Smith succeeded in holding on to it and continued without causing a caution. Unfortunately with just seven laps remaining, he had fallen out of the top-ten and was back to twelfth position.

The eighth yellow flag on lap sixty-two allowed the cars to group together and Moses was able to regain his positions and finish the race in seventh place.

“It was a pretty good day. Finishing seventh made it a really good day for points also.... Now off to Irwindale next week.” Moses stated.

As Moses predicted the day before, his charge from the back to the front earned him the contingency award – “Coca-Cola Move of the Race,” commonly known as the hard charger award. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regulars Joey Logano and David Gilliland finished the race first and second respectively.

This event is the sixth of fourteen events on the 2011 schedule for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. They return to the track Saturday, July 2 for the Southern California Toyota Dealers “200” presented by King Taco at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

Excited about Infineon Return

Moses Smith, pilot of the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing will be racing thru the turns of Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West makes its return to the 1.99 mile road course on June 25th. This will be the fifth visit to Infineon for Smith in the West Series.

“Heading back to my favorite road course is exciting,” said Smith. “My first three trips there were unlucky but the last year we came away with a top-ten finish. The first year we were taken out after leading the race, and the second year my car caught on fire. In 2009, I was able to lead the race but once again we were unable to finish the race. The No. 16 Hasa Toyota was wrecked during a late in the race restart attempt. Our day was done.”

“So we are ready to turn our luck around. We are second in the chase for the West Series championship and look to close the gap on the point leader. Infineon is the place to get that done.”

“This is a great track for the HASA Pool Products fans; they are really into the road courses,” continued Smith. “We’ve always had great support and the entire No. 16 Hasa/NAPA team is looking forward to this weekend.”

Degree Men Off-Season Adventureswith Mark Sanchez

Mark Travis John Sanchez (born November 11, 1986) is a quarterback for the New York Jets. He was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft as the second quarterback and the fifth overall selection by the New York Jets.

Now Sanchez has teamed with Degree Men to help determine his new off-season training schedule and get him ready for next season. Degree Men is all about challenging guys during adrenaline-fueled moments, and as a QB, Mark is always under pressure.

Through the Degree Men Facebook page, fans voted for Sanchez to train with the JR Motorsports Pitcrew and Orange County Fire Brigade.

Last month, he visited the Charlotte Motor Speedway to experience, firsthand, the adrenaline rush of NASCAR. With the help of JR Motorsports and Aric Almirola, Driver of the No. 88 Degree Men Chevrolet, Sanchez learned what it takes to be a pitcrew member and the stomach that is necessary to drive around the race track at nearly 200 MPH.

I must say that I am so jealous of the JR Motorsports tour that Mark experienced. What a great opportunity to learn about NASCAR from the inside out.

Oil Problem Hampers

Saturday’s O'Reilly Auto Parts 200 marked the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West's first visit to the Bullring since 2003. The weather peaked at 96 degrees and was windy. The Bullring offered family entertainment at family-friendly prices. The concession stand features $1 hot dogs, $1 sodas and $1 beer. However, Las Vegas, Nevada was not too lucky for the #16 Hasa Pool Products / NAPA Filter Toyota Camry.

After qualifying thirteenth, Moses had patiently worked his way into eighth position. Unfortunately, his charge to the front was hampered on lap 81 when his car went up in smoke.

“What a tough night for us. We had a good car, but went eleven laps down when I had to come in to fix a low oil problem.” Moses finished the race in twentieth place.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 200 will air on SPEED on Thursday, June 23 at 6 p.m. ET.
The next event on the 2011 schedule for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West will be the Thunder Valley Casino Resort 200 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., on Saturday, June 25.

Greg Pursley leads the championship standings with 920 points. He is followed by Moses Smith with 719, Martinez with 715, David Mayhew with 701 and Brett Thompson with 686. Completing the top 10 are Self at 683, Holmes at 657, Jonathon Gomez at 647, Daryl Harr at 631 and Kwasniewski at 578.

Antelope, CA (June 5, 2011)–Bill McAnally Racing driver Moses Smith and the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota team are looking to give team owner, Bill McAnally a third victory at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Smith is coming to the Bullring to compete in Saturday's O’Reilly Auto Parts 200 NASCAR K&N Series West event.

The series has made only 3 previous visits to the d-shaped short track just north of Las Vegas. Bill McAnally Racing’s Austin Cameron put the NAPA entry on the pole in 2002 and brought home the victory. The following year, veteran driver Jim Inglebright piloted BMR’s Jellybelly entry to Victory Lane after leading the most laps and starting on the pole.

The Bullring is not new to Smith. He ran a full season in the ASA Speed Trucks in 2005 where he brought home a second place finish in three starts.

“The Bullring has some good racing,” said Smith. “Its d-shape reminds me of the track in Kyle, Texas. It’ll allow for some great side-by-side racing with plenty of opportunity to pass. It’s going to be a great race for the fans and a great opportunity for the HASA team to close the point gap for this year’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship.”

Smith and the No. 16 HASA Toyota team are currently second in the chase for the West Series championship with ten races left on the schedule.

Joining the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Series June 11 will be the NASCAR Super Late Model, NASCAR Charger, NASCAR Bomber, Legend Cars and Bandolero classes. Spectator gates will open at 4 p.m. for this event. General admission parking always is free. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the LVMS ticket office or by calling (800) 644-4444. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West – formerly known as the NASCAR Winston West Series – will return to Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 11 for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 200.

The prestigious series has served as a springboard for such notable NASCAR drivers as Kevin Harvick, Las Vegan Brendan Gaughan, Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope, Chad Little, Ron Hornaday Jr and David Gilliland.

The K&N Pro Series West tour first visited Southern Nevada at the old Las Vegas Speedway Park (where the Bullring now sits) in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, it moved to the then-new LVMS 1.5-mile superspeedway until 2002. The series also competed at the Bullring from 2000-2002.

The series’ origins can be traced back to 1954, when NASCAR came to the West Coast and began sanctioning the Pacific Coast Late Model circuit in California, which included stops in San Diego (Balboa Stadium), Oakland, San Mateo (Bay Meadows Speedway) and Gardena (Carrell Speedway).

“It’s a natural fit for K&N to partner with Las Vegas Motor Speedway.,” said Steve Williams, Vice President of K&N. “It’s a quality facility with a dedication to racing for almost every type of motorsport, just like K&N filters. Because of that it is the ideal facility to add to the Pro Series schedule.”

Location, Location, Location! It has been announced that Moses Smith has moved the manufacturing of the Formula Mazda to Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, TX. Motorsport Ranch is a Country Club for motoring enthusiasts, which is centered around two purpose built road racing courses.

"Being located at a race track was my three year goal for the Formula Mazda when I took over the manufacturing rights in September of 2009. Although a bit early, moving to the Ranch completes this goal." said Smith.

The location and access to track will help to propel the FM class into the future and allow for an easily accessible race car test drive environment. The ability for potential FM owners to test drive and enjoy the Formula Mazda will bring more drivers into the class and make the racing even more fun than it already is.

Moses has also taken the reigns of the well-established Texas Autosports and the Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear Southwest Series. Tim and Sandy Magrath spent fourteen years living and breathing Formula Mazda, and it shows. Their hard work and dedication are evident in the success of the arrive and drive program, their race team, the FCC Southwest Series, and Formula Mazda in general. It is with bittersweet feelings that Moses Smith Racing jointly announced that Tim and Sandy have decided to "change gears" and move on to a different adventure in their lives.

Moses Smith Racing LLC will remain the manufacturer of the Formula Mazda and Formula Mazda parts, and will now be located in Cresson, TX. The existing shop in Tempe, AZ has already been closed. Texas Autosports, under new ownership, will remain as it has been, the coordinator of the Southwest Formula Car Challenge Series, Southwest Formula Mazda and Pro Mazda parts dealer, prep shop, and race team.

NASCAR K&N PRO SERIES EAST-WEST
COMBINATION RACE AT IOWA SPEEDWAY

This will be the fifth edition of the East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway. In addition, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West visited the .875-mile track in Newton, Iowa for a stand-alone series race in 2009.

Iowa Speedway, located about 30 miles east of Des Moines, is owned and operated by U.S. Motorsport Corporation. It was designed by former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Rusty Wallace. The track opened in September of 2006.

The four East-West Combination events have resulted in four different winners – Joey Logano (2007), Brian Ickler (2008), Kyle Busch (2009) and Max Gresham (2010).

The four events have also produced four different Coors Light Pole winners – Kevin Harvick (2007), Austin Dillon (2008), Busch (2009) and David Mayhew (2010).

Busch was the only driver to win the E-W race at Iowa from the pole. Ickler started the furthest back and won, coming from seventh on the grid.

Only four drivers had multiple top-five finishes in the E-W action at Iowa. Ickler, Mayhew, Jeffrey Earnhardt and Jesus Hernandez each registered two top fives.

Hernandez has the most top 10 finishes in the combination races, finishing in the top 10 in all three E-W events he started.

With an average finish of 5.33, Hernandez also leads that category.

Busch has led the most laps of competition in E-W action at Iowa. He was out front for 168 laps in his dominating win in 2009.

Only five drivers competed in all four E-W combination races at Iowa – Mayhew, Daryl Harr, Eric Holmes, Matt Kobyluck and Brett Thompson.

Last year’s event was the only East-West combination race at Iowa to be extended by a late-race caution for a green-white-checkered finish.

Chevrolet went to Victory Lane in the first two E-W events, while the two most recent wins went to Toyota.

104 different drivers have competed in the four E-W combination events at Iowa.

Capture the Crown(Part Two)

As Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag in the Sprint Cup race on the Monster Mile, NASCAR Race Mom suddenly became highly motivated to continue her series on her Richmond International Raceway trip to attend the Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400.

The weekend started off rather unexpectedly. After landing at the Byrd International Airport (RIC), NRM was greeted with a signboard by my driver Warren! Now that does not happen to NASCAR Race Mom too often! Warren was very polite and efficient, as he escorted me to my hotel.

After checking into the Richmond Marriott , the entire “Capture the Crown” group drove to the Richmond International Raceway to obtain their track credentials. RIR is conveniently located in Henrico County, just outside the city of Richmond, Virginia. It is a large facility and can hold over 100,000 fans, workers and race team members. Now NASCAR Race Mom has been to numerous short tracks, especially on the West Coast. However, the enormousness and history of “America’s Premier Short Track” was not lost on me.

To finish out our day of arrival, the group vanned to the Book Binders for dinner. It was the perfect atmosphere for us bloggers to get to know our Crown Royal Hosts Zack, Jennifer, and Catlin.

The service was excellent and the manager even stopped by our table for a chat. My grilled salmon; baked potato, loaded with butter and chives; and spinach was tasty and so filling I had to forgo desert.

However, I did have a responsible nightcap (Crown Over Crushed Ice) before retiring to my hotel room. The anticipation made it difficult for me to fall asleep, but I knew that NASCAR Race Mom would need her rest for the thrilling day ahead. The Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400 promised to be fun-filled and exhilarating!

Before signing off, NASCAR Race Mom cannot pass up this opportunity to congratulate NASCAR Driver Matt Kenseth, his sponsor Crown Royal and the entire #17 team on their second win in the last five races, and their sixth place standing in the championship points. Could this be the year that Matt and Crown Royal win the championship? It is going to be an extraordinary 2011 NASCAR Season.
